The best “crowd” in town and a great dance floor. Two Free dance lessons prior to the Social commencing 6:30, and 7.15pm. Organize a group or come on your own for a great night out. Hello Everyone,

with the Two Big Holidays,  Easter and Passover starting on the same day this year, firstly I would like to wish You all and your Families A Very Happy and Peaceful holiday and secondly, for that reason our April Social will be held on the 2nd Friday of April, April the 13th.

There is an old saying that you should never spend a Black Friday evening at home, so here’s your opportunity to get out of the house and join us for another great night out. I have been sorting out my new music for days now and I am sure you will love the new selection.

I haven’t seen some of our regular guests at the Randwick social for a while, so please don’t forget to call or send an email to a friend or two to invite them for a great night of dancing and romancing.

Also, to give you more time to learn some new dances or steps we will run Two dance lessons before the Social instead of the current Three (on a trial basis), commencing at 6:30 and 7:15pm. The two dances for this Social will be Salsa and Jive.

Hi Everyone,

just a quick reminder about this week’s (2nd of March) Social Dance at Randwick Labor Club. We’ve had a good start into 2012, so I”m sure this will be another great party.

Organize a group or come on your own and have a great night of fun and dancing. Join us for 3 dance classes before the social, commencing at 6.30, 7.00 and 7.30pm to brush up on your basics or just to socialize with other people.

Also, IMPORTANT message regarding our April social.

Due to the fact that the 1st Friday in April happened to be a Good Friday, our regular Friday Social Dance will be held on the 2nd Friday of the month (April, 13th) instead of the 6th!!!

Hi Everyone,

hope you’ve All had a great holiday and ready to conquer the world. As every year February is the month lots of us start new courses, plan big changes, promise to get fitter, meet new people, make new friends. You can have it all!

Join our regular dance classes commencing Monday, 6th of Feb. at Randwick Labor Club and Wednesday, 8th of Feb. at Club Bondi Junction. Both starting at 7pm. We will use every method possible to make sure that you’ll be a star at the end of the 8 week course.

If you are too busy to attend our regular dance classes or you’re nearly as good as John Travolta or a Russian Ballerina then our Friday Socials will be ideal for you. There are dance lessons just before the social, so you can brush up on your dancing while socializing and having fun. With lots of new dance music we are planning to have a great dancing year. So make your first Friday of each month your Retro dance night!

Happy New Year Everybody!

Hope you’ve All had a great holiday and are full of energy to start a new year. I wish this New Year will bring us all good Health, Love and Friendship, Prosperity and lots and lots of Fun.

We are still on holiday, with our dance classes, till 16th of January, however our first Social for 2012, will be held this Friday, 6th of January, 2012 and then every first Friday of  the month.

Thank you All for your great support in 2011 and I am looking forward to see you enjoying yourself again on the dance floor in 2012 at our Friday Socials.

The success and future of our Friday Socials depends on “the numbers”, so please do not keep it secret, tell everybody.

The Importance of Rhythm

How to learn to dance to the beat.

Whether you can sing or not it has nothing to do with the ability to keep time to music. If you can tap to the beat with your fingers or your foot, that’s already enough to enjoy dancing.

Many people falsely believe that some are born with a natural sense of rhythm. Even if there was any scientific evidence to confirm this thinking, exposure to music during our life as well as the type of sports and activities we performed during our early years play more important role in developing a good sense of rhythm.

Most of good dancers are total musical illiterates and don’t know one note from another but they can easily keep time.

It is important to understand that dancers do not follow the melody or the tune of the song. The speed or the count of the dance is determined by the beat or tempo of the music.

If you are in one of the small group of people who struggle on the dance floor (providing you realise your weakness) and can hardly get the second dance with the same partner here are some easy and simple ways to improve your sense of rhythm:

1.       If you are already on the dance floor and are not sure when to start “When in Rome do as The Romans do”, simply look around and follow “the crowd”.

2.       One of the best and easy ways to start is to listen to your favourite song. It is usually much easier to feel the underlying tempo, beat or the pulse. Try to isolate a drum or any other base leading instrument which usually carry the beat and acts like a metronome for both, the other members of the band and the dancers. If you still find it difficult to hear the beat then close your eyes and try to imagine a drummer hitting the drum with his foot pedal. You should be able to hear a soft “boom” which indicates each beat and accentuates the tempo. This accentuated beat is the one you need to distinguish to be able to keep time to music.

3.       If you still need more help, the next things to do is stand next to a speaker and place your upper part of your hand gently on the base section and feel the vibration.  You should be able to feel a stronger vibration with every accentuated beat.

4.       Next, try beating time with your foot on the floor and in the next stage add tapping a table at the same time with your free hand. Try various types of music starting with Waltz, Tango, Rumba or any other song with a heavy beat.

5.       Once you are able to tap to any music, try walking to the music, taking one step to each beat.
I can assure you that in no time your sense of rhythm will improve dramatically so will your popularity on the dance floor.
