Want to become a great leader/follower?

dance couple

Changing partners is the answer!
Every time we start a new dance class we try to explain the importance of dancing with many partners. There will however always be students who think that dancing with the same partner will help them to learn better. The reality is that almost without an exception every couple who insist on dancing with the same partner becomes one of the worst in the class. You cannot become a good dancer by dancing with just one partner. By dancing only with one partner, you will become good at dancing with each other with all the mistakes and bad habits that become “correct” for you. While there is no question that dancing with a better partner will make you “look” good, it is not the best way to improve lead/follow skills. Your lead and follow skills will gradually “deteriorate”, because you’re not working them very hard. After some months without exposure to other partners, especially beginners, you may be surprised to find that you can’t dance with them very well, even though they seem to do okay with other beginners. You can improve your styling by dancing with more experienced, but you learn how to lead/follow better by dancing with less experienced partners. It is easy to lead/follow a great dancer. All your weaknesses as a leader/follower show up with the beginner. Dancing with poor to average leader/follower is a good reality check. If you find it hard to lead a less experienced person it is usually a signal that your leading skills need some more work.

dance ball

Do You remember this?
The Grand Ball
What a night!
“…After months of hard work, a few sleepless nights
and five show cancellations – It happened!
More than 400 people attended the Ball. It was
a great night! To see you all dressed up like
Hollywood Stars and dance like Fred and Ginger
it was an unforgettable experience. It is a pity the
rest of the 19,000 students we’ve taught over
the last 20 years missed out on this great Retro
reunion….”

Well, 5 more years have passed since that memorable night and it is time again to celebrate another mile stone in Retro Dance’s Life.

In May 2011, Retro Dance will be celebrating it’s 25! Birthday, what makes us one of Sydney’s oldest dance schools.
By now we’ve taught more than 23,000 people. For many we have change their lives forever. Some found many new friends, some learnt a new skill and quite a few found their life partners. At least 34 couples, who met at Retro Dance are still happily married.
Currently we are looking for a suitable venue to organize a ball at the beginning of June, 2011.
We would greatly appreciate your help in promoting this great event among all of your friends and especially those who have attended Retro Dance classes in the past
It would be a great pleasure to see many of our past students at this great 25th Birthday celebration.

Hope to see you all at tomorrow’s Social dance at Randwick,

Happy dancing!
Edward and Tamya
